Jarmila Štuková - Us and Them

The photography exhibition “Us and Them” by photojournalist and documentarist Jarmila Štuková, a thirteen-time Czech Press Photo award winner, addresses a number of urgent global issues. The exhibition connects six regions across Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East with the northern hemisphere through themes such as child safety, massive deforestation, and self-mutilation as a means of protection from sexual violence. The show challenges visitors to bridge the imaginary divide between "us"—the privileged part of the world—and "them"—those living in unstable conditions.
What makes this exhibition exceptional is not only its subject matter and photographic treatment, but also its artistic and spatial concept. The stories were written by journalist Jakub Szántó, while the distinctive scenographic design was created by Pavel Morávek, who tailored the installation not only to the narrative arc of the exhibition but also to the specific architecture of Artium and the Bořislavka complex. These narrative texts help visitors process the difficult realities portrayed in Štuková’s photographs.
